What is a Doctor of Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is an emphasis on the overall health of the body and the relation of its nerves, muscles, bones, and organs. Doctors of Osteopathy (D.O.s) base diagnosis and treatment on the idea that the body's systems are all connected. Instead of treating specific symptoms or illnesses, D.O.s regard and treat the body as an integrated whole. Osteopathic medcine focuses on prevention and and health maintenance. Like medical doctors (M.D.s), D.O.s must complete four years of basic medical education from an accredited college of osteopathic medicine, complete an internship and residency program. D.O.'s are able to prescribe medication and perform surgery.
